Radio Flyer, Soverel 26Radio Flyer

This is Radio Flyer built in 1977, owned by Rocky Miller.

For the most part, Radio Flyer is raced weekly in PHRF on Wednesday nights. It's primarily our "Wednesday night" boat. (Clear Lake Racing) Her weight is a disadvantage on our short course so she doesn't get a chance to stretch her legs. We have a highly experienced crew and good equipment....but can't get her around the course fast (tack) enough to sail her 174 rating (about the same rating as a J24). Our strategy is minimum tacks and to take advantage of our excellent pointing ability. A fairly well sailed J27 will walk all over us in dying evening breeze (which we usually get on Wednesday nights) We've considered taking a chainsaw to the interior (jokingly) but we could never do such a thing to such a beautiful boat.

It's an excellent boat for our local (more casual) Saturday Night Rum Races...12 mile course around Galveston Bay, around fixed markers. In this venue, it's an ideal boat to introduce friends and coworkers to sailing with it's big boat amenities. Off the wind she's fast....One race we actually placed 5th against 60+ boats. Overall the boat and it's systems are in good shape.

Backoff

My name is Richard Neal and I have Soverel # 29, named "Backoff", sail #29. The registration says it was built in 1976, but it is still very competitive. I have won "Boat of the year" for 2 years, and most always finish in the top 1/4 of the fleet.

The boat was originally named "Savage Shrimp", it had a salmon colored hull with a picture of a shrimp on the sides. It was dry docked for a long time and finally sold. The new owner painted it white and named "Killer Mullet". I bought it around 1996 and renamed it "Back Off'"

Razzledash is owned by Randy Haynes in Bryan Texas. I bought my boat in spring 2002 at a Boy Scout auction. Currently she is stripped to a bare hull. As usual, the project is taking much longer than planned.

Sörös Cailín Soros Cailin

John Spierre purchased Sörös Cailín from Scott Erdmman last summer. The name is a blend of Hungarian and Gaelic, it roughly translates to the "Beer Drinking Girl". John spent the winter fixing leaks, stripping the bottom paint, and fixing blisters. He and his wife are now racing Wednesday nights.

We are having similar frustrations as Rocky and Chris on Wednesday night Buoy races, Only we are rated 168 here and the J-24's are 171. I hate having to give them 3 seconds. Needless to say Wednesday Nights have been lack luster. I'm just happy when I beat a couple of them.

However, we did place 2nd in the Weekend Spring Series and managed to Beat a Wylie 40. C&C 30, and a Laser 27 on a 75 mile "off Shore" race in June. We were only 23 minutes behind a J-35 on corrected time.
