NASS Spring Regatta will be sailed as a match race

(Annapolis, MD – April 2, 2010) In a surprise announcement yesterday, April 1st, the Naval Academy Sailing Squadron has announced their annual Spring Regatta will be sailed as a match race. The new format will follow the “best of three” format made popular by the recent America’s Cup. “When only two J/35s signed up for the the regatta this year we decided to go ahead with the format change,” said Bob Holmes the event’s principle race officer. “Especially when we realized that Bzing, one of the registered boats, was spending so much money on preparation over the winter. It really reminded us of the exorbitant costs of an AC campaign.”

Holmes speculated the sharp decline in participation for this year’s was due to fear. “The rest of the local J/35 fleet must just be too scared of the new competition from Bzing.” If true, Bzing has also put serious smack down by registering early for the next regatta in the Fleet 7 series, the Annapolis NOOD. Bruce Artman, Fleet captain and the only boat owner with the stones to register against the Bzing syndicate for the NASS match race said, “We all knew that Bzing would be a tough competitor, but I’m surprised at the fleet’s wussiness. Is that a real word that I can use?”
